La detonación de un almacén repleto de material de alto poder explosivo entre ellos, nitrato de amonio y de sodio, en el puerto de Beirut, la capital de El Líbano, dejó hasta el momento unos 73 muertos y más de 3.700 personas heridas, según confirmaron esta tarde las autoridades libanesas.
El nitrato de sodio es un compuesto químico utilizado en la fabricación de explosivos de uso militar y para combustible sólido de cohetes. Poco después se informó que también se encontró nitrato de amonio, de similares propiedades al nitrato de sodio. El nitrato de amonio, según se dice, es un elemento utilizado por grupos terroristas para fabricar sus explosivos caseros.
El cargamento altamente explosivo estaba retenido en el puerto de Beirut, sin embargo, no está claro a quien pertenecía aunque si se filtró que el destino final de esos elementos era África. El impresionante estallido provocó serios daños y destrozos en un radio de cinco kilómetros.
Hay versiones contradictorias sobre las causas que originaron la terrible explosión, una de ellas es que en en las instalaciones portuarias había mucho fertilizantes y juegos artificiales. El Líbano es sede del grupo armado Hezbollah, del que se dice es financiado por Irán, es identificado como grupo terrorista por varios países occidentales incluyendo los Estados Unidos.
El Primer Ministro de El Líbano, Hassan Diab aseguró que lo sucedido en el puerto de la capital libanesa “no pasará sin que se rindan cuentas”. Diab solicitó ayuda internacional hacer frente a la desgracia y para colaborar en las investigaciones. Israel fue uno de los primeros en ofrecer asistencia humanitaria.
“Los responsables de esta catástrofe pagarán el precio” reiteró el líder libanés durante una comparecencia televisada. “Envío un llamamiento urgente a todos los países que son amigos y hermanos y que aman al Líbano, para que estén a su lado y nos ayuden a tratar estas profundas heridas” enfatizó el Primer Ministro.

El Presidente de EEUU Donald Trump, dijo que las explosiones que sacudieron este martes a Beirut “parecen un terrible ataque”. Añadió “hemos tenido una muy buena amistad con el pueblo de El Líbano y estaremos allí para ayudar”. Trump hizo estos comentarios tras un encuentro con periodistas en la Casa Blanca.
Según el mandatario estadounidense, expertos militares le comentaron que las explosiones en el puerto de Beirut podría tratarse de algún tipo de bomba tras aclarar que no parecía tratarse de una explosión de manufactura.
