El ministro de Relaciones Exteriores de Taiwánn, David Lee, respondió los conceptos de la OMS haciendo ver a través de su portavoz que el organismo internacional cedía ante las presiones del régimen de Beijing. “No ha podido resistir la presión inadecuada del gobierno chino y mantener los principios profesionales y de neutralidad para aceptar la plena participación de Taiwán” dijo Bob Chen, vocero de la cancillería. Incluso, hizo notar que en el informe de la OMS sobre la enfermedad todavía muestra a Taiwán como parte de China.
Desde el inicio de la pandemia, la que la administración de Tsai Ing-wen denunció desde un principio ante la OMS, el gobierno taiwanés fue dejado de lado por las autoridades sanitarias y no se le permitió participar de paneles globales para luchar contra el brote del virus. “El ministerio enfatiza que el sistema de salud completo y sólido de Taiwán, así como su exitosa experiencia en la prevención de enfermedades, lo convierten en un socio indispensable para que la OMS logre su objetivo de “salud para todos” remarcó Chen.
“Sin embargo, debido a problemas políticos, Taiwán no ha sido invitado a la WHA desde 2017” recordó el portavoz del ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores del país asiático. En ese sentido, Chen ilustró que entre 2009 y 2019, el gobierno de Taiwán solicitó asistir a 187 reuniones técnicas de la OMS, pero fue invitado a asistir solo a 57, una tasa de rechazo de alrededor del 70%. La OMS nunca explicó los motivos de la discriminación, según reportó Taipéi Times.
Añadió que Taiwán puede y está dispuesto a participar y contribuir a mejorar la calidad de la salud de todos los seres humanos, y ya ha tomado medidas mediante la donación de recursos médicos y el intercambio de experiencias de prevención de enfermedades para ayudar a otras naciones a luchar contra la propagación de Covid-19. “Taiwán pede ayudar, y Taiwán está ayudando” dijo enfático el vocero de la Cancillería.
DISCRIMINADOS POR LA OMS A PEDIDO DE CHINA
En febrero, el gobierno de Taiwán ya había advertido de la posibilidad de compartir sus conocimientos con los profesionales de la OMS como consecuencia de su cercanía con el gobierno chino. “Taiwán no está gobernada por China y, por tanto, no debería ser considerada como una zona infectada”, había manifestado otra vocera del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores, Joanne Ou, durante la tercera semana de febrero. “Instamos a la OMS a que sea profesional y neutral:rompan con el reclamo irracional de China. No sean secuestrados por China” destacó.
En los días recientes se agudizó el cruce de palabras entre Taiwán y la OMS y la propia presidenta Tsai Ing-wen le replicó a Ghebreyesus que quedó en el ojo de la tormenta por su trabajo durante la pandemia. “Protesto firmemente las acusaciones de que Taiwán está instigando ataques racistas en la comunidad internacional. Taiwán siempre se ha opuesto a todas las formas de discriminación. Durante años hemos sido excluidos de las organizaciones internacionales, y sabemos mejor que nadie lo que se siente ser discriminado y aislado” dijo la jefa de Estado.
Pero el escándalo siguió creciendo en los últimos días y la Isla decidió hacer públicos los correos electrónicos que había enviado a la OMS en los que advertía sobre el incipiente brote de un nuevo tipo de neumonía que se había comenzado a observr en Wuhan, China, lo que fue desmentido por la OMS, sin embargo, el Centro de Control de Enfermedades de Taiwán emitió un comunicado en el que revelaron el contenido y la fecha de los mismos.
