Prensa mundial satura sus espacios con información sobre el COVID-19

Internacionales January 01, 1970

Alarmismo y sensacionalismo podrían resumir una cobertura a veces desproporcionada en la prensa internacional,  sobre todo la escrita a través de sus páginas digitales, alrededor de la pandemia del coronavirus o COVID-19 contribuyendo consciente o inconscientemente a desatar los miedos, el pánico y la incertidumbre entre una población que se muestra desconcertada ante el descomunal volumen informativo o desinformativo sobre el tema.

Es verdad que también hay medios de comunicación que se han dado a la tarea de no caer en las redes del sensacionalismo limitándose a una cobertura prudente y educativa para orientar de la mejor forma a sus lectores o televidentes, supliendo el papel de algunos gobiernos que no han sabido administrar y manejar el problema o lo han minimizado y las consecuencias ahora se están pagando con miles de contagios en más de 100 países y centenares de muertes.

Si usted quiere leer que está pasando en Argentina, en Panamá, México, Francia, Alemania, China o Qatar, Israel e Italia, tiene asegurada una buena dosis de información sobre el coronavirus y todo lo que ello conlleva como las medidas aplicadas por el país en cuestión, los actos públicos cancelados, las escuelas cerradas o que no hay mascarillas, que las colas en las tiendas de alimentos son inmensas, que hay escasez de tal o cual producto o que su precio fue triplicado o quintuplicado aprovechando la crítica situación.

Los políticos de la noche a la mañana se han convertido en infectólogos o epidemiólogos, especialistas médicos barajan sus propias teorías de que si el virus se quedará por mucho tiempo o desaparecerá solo o se encontrará el antídoto para contrarrestarlo. Todo este tipo de cosas también ha provocado que la gente corra desesperadamente a vaciar las tiendas de alimentos y productos de primera necesidad creando una especie de compras compulsivas, nerviosas.

Algunos gobiernos replican las medidas adoptadas por otros estados, también los hay quienes han tomado sus propias acciones, apropiadas o no, para eso está la prensa, que también se ha ocupado de señalar culpables porque no se tomaron a tiempo las indicaciones correspondientes o no se siguieron los protocolos ofrecidos por la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), etc.

Días atrás muchos vieron unas imágenes bochornosas transmitidas por la televisión hondureña y otras señales internacionales sobre el caso de una hondureña que procedía del exterior en un vuelo comercial y que supuestamente presentaba los síntomas del virus. La prensa se amontonó en la terminal aérea del país centroamericano dando la sensación de que esperaban la llegada de un criminal o de una celebridad, violando la intimidad e irrespetando la dignidad de esa persona. A esos niveles se ha llegado en determinadas ocasiones. Creo que la mujer hondureña fue sacada por otra vía inaccesible a los medios.

Quizá habría que informarse que hay países que han lidiado con relativo éxito con el virus logrando contener su propagación y reduciendo al mínimo los contagios, incluso, en China, donde surgió el brote en diciembre pasado, las infecciones se han reducido drásticamente y bajado considerablemente el número de fallecidos, Taiwán y Corea del Sur, son dos casos aleccionadores al respecto. De lo que se trata ya no es si apareció un caso infeccioso en determinado país, sino de que es lo que se está haciendo para frenar, contener la propagación de la pandemia.
